The gut is the second-largest network of nerves outside of our heads and has been called our second brain. It has been estimated that the kilometres of neurons and nerve connections in our intestines are the same size as the brain of a cat — an animal we admire for its cunning, self-centredness and nine lives. We should listen more to our guts.
